LEARNING OBJECTIVE: To develop understanding of inverse operations in order to solve problems
SUCCESS CRITERIA: You will be able to solve all the 'Think of a Number' Problems
ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY: Period 1: Hand out the Christmas Tree Problem. Give students ten mins to try and solve it. Use answer to hep solve with students / give them the answer.
LESSON: Hand Out the Think of a number 1 worksheet. They have to solve the problem in their exercise books. let them check their answers (answers provided in folder).
TThen Repeat with Think of a number worksheets 2 & 3.
EXTENSION: Should anyone finish, use the Age old Problems 1 worksheet. They will struggle at first with this and will need help on getting it started. There is an answer Family Tree provided.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: DIscovering various methods to solve simple equations
SUCCESS CRITERIA: You will be able to solve simple equations
ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY: Advent Calendar - 6th Dec
LESSON: Look at some more examples of solving simple equations on IWB, encourage discussion on INVERSES method but alos look at examples such as 15 - x = 12 kind of questoins where inverses method does not work
Continue to work thorugh problems from Monday
Extra Problems to stretch quicker workers.

Mon Dec 3rd - Intro to Simple Algebra - Substitution
LEARNING OBECTIVE: understand how values can be represented in an expression by letters and how to use the values to then work out the answer
SUCCESS CRITERIA: You will be able to substitute a letter for a value in an expression and then work out the answer
ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY: Play think of a number type games. with stuell them what has dents - I think of a number and then tell them what has happened to it and what the answer is. they have to then work out what the number is.
LESSON: USe examples from Engagement activity to show how the think of a number games can be written as an algebraic expression and then by looking at inverse operations yopu can work out answers.
Lots of examples on IWB
Use these Sweet Bag Presentations to practice writing algebraic expressions. Sweet Bag1, Sweet Bag 2.
Use this Presentation to get the idea of solving equations
Use these equations to get students to solve the problems - Cut out each problem, stick it into your book and then write down what number the letter must be for the sum to be true.
PLENARIES: Working with students at tables, marking work, explaingin if there are any difficulties....
