Mon Sep 24th - Common Fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: You will discover how the same number can be written as a fraction and also as a decimal
SUCCESS CRITERIA: You will be able to convert tenths, fifths, half, quarter and three quarters to decimals and know which decimals can be converted back into these fractions

ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY:

LESSON:

  • Hand out three blank cards, Get students to write 1/2 on one, 1/4 on another and 3/4 on the third.
  • Ask around class for the decimal equivalents of these three fractions, discuss what the fractions mean.
  • Write equivalents on back of fractions.
  • Repeat with the tenths on ten more cards,
  • then fifths on five more cards.

In pairs play a guessing game in order to learn what fraction is equivalent to what decimal.

TASK: Turn cards over to the decimal side and put them all in order
Now turn them over
List all the fractions that are the same decimal number

Look at this lesson, play matching pairs game on screen 4 a few times, encouraging all students to come to IWB to make their choice

PLENARY: Checking answers with students all through lesson, supporting at desks if struggling -
