Mon 27th Feb – More Number Sequences

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: Develop techniques for finding the rule for more difficult sequences

SUCCESS CRITERIA: You will be able to find the rule for more difficult sequences and then add more numbers to the sequence

STARTER:

For each of these number sequences write down the Starting Number and the rule and the next 5 numbers in each of the sequences.

  1. 5, 8, 11, 14, 17
  2. 2, 8, 14, 20, 26
  3. 1, 10, 19, 28, 37
  4. 100, 92, 84, 76, 58
  5. 21, 17, 13, 9

LESSON:

Look at this number sequence

1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21...

Can you spot how the pattern is growing?

Work as a class trying to work out the rule and the next 5 numbers

Can you use these skills to find the rule and next five numbers for these sequences

  1. 4, 5, 8, 13, 20
  2. 5, 7, 11, 17, 25
  3. 2, 5, 9, 14, 20, 27
  4. 100, 90, 81, 73, 66
  5. 180, 165, 142, 131, 121

What about this sequence. Can you spot the rule?

1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13

PLENARY: Checking Answers throughout the lesson. Check students can remember simple sequence, then check on more difficult sequences. Use five finger feedback from students.
